Eager to create a space for their live-in au-pair and a home office, Ben and Sally considered expanding their semi-detached house in Balham. Thinking vertically, they opted to undertake a loft conversion, which would create two further bedrooms and an en-suite bathroom in their property. Their desired outcome in converting their loft was also to maximise light. Originally, the property was on three levels, excluding the loft space, so ensuring that light could travel to through to the lower floors was essential!
We take great pleasure in working in tandem with our clients to create a loft that satisfies their needs. Our highly qualified architects worked closely with Ben and Sally, who were keen to play an integral part in the design and layout of the new rooms. To maximise the amount of natural light in the front of the house, we incorporated as many Velux windows as possible into the room that would become their home office. We also suggested that a roof dome should be fitted above the stairwell to let light flood into the floors below.
The ceiling height throughout the house is relatively high and they were concerned about the head height in the loft. We addressed this by lowering the ceilings in order to create the extra room they desired, without compromising on the height of the rooms below. To make the most of the bathroom space, we suggested placing the shower over the top of the stairway.
This wonderful loft conversion transformed Ben and Sally’s attic into three intelligently designed spaces: A brightly lit bedroom which also serves as their office, a beautiful double bedroom with a Juliet balcony, and an airy en-suite with a shower. The two bedrooms are spacious and combine the practicality of built-in storage with elegant décor.
The addition of double Velux windows in their home office is a superb way of doubling the amount of light that penetrates the room. Ben and Sally are happy with the bright area to work in, with space available for a sofa under the windows if they wish to take a break from work.
The brilliance is in every detail! Clever placement of fittings in the bathroom results in headspace for the shower, and its location over the stairwell increases the overall size of the room. Placing the shower controls outside the cubicle is indicative of the attention to detail our design team employ, in order to satisfy our clients.
Thoughtful planning of the au-pair bedroom is evidenced by the addition of usb sockets, wiring for a television, as well as built-in storage to maximise space. Here, the Juliet balcony creates a feeling of openness and adds a touch of luxury.
