A fantastic loft conversion that doubled the property’s size, turning a two bedroom flat into a family home. Andre is pleased with the result, saying: "We found that converting our loft was a practical solution, we moved up, instead of out!"

The Project

When Andre and Alfke bought their two bedroom property in Balham, they were aware that there was untouched living space in their attic. With a son, they needed more room and were faced with the options of moving out of their property or improving it.

With soaring house prices, upsizing was unachievable and they found a loft conversation to be a more practical and cost-effective alternative. They'd also fallen in love with Balham and were reluctant to move. As featured in house-extension.co.uk, they pictured a new master bedroom with an en-suite, and a guest bedroom in their property.

Having spotted numerous Landmark Lofts advertisements in their area, they decided to get in touch with the goal to transform their two-bedroom flat into a family home!

Andre explains:

“With a young son we were bursting out of the property and were faced with moving or improving. However, because house prices had rocketed in the area, we found that converting our loft was a much more practical solution."

Our Approach

Working with Andre and Alfke from inception to completion, we devised a plan that would create a new master bedroom with an en-suite, and a bedroom for their son. An outdoor space would also lead off from the master bedroom.

Excited to have been involved throughout the project, Andre says:

“Our project manager kept us in the loop with each stage of the build.”

The Result

Converting the attic of Andre’s flat in Balham doubled its size, offering the family two additional bedrooms, a spacious bathroom and a terrace. Delighted that the development also increased the value of their home, Andre and Alfke have transformed the new loft area into a multifunctional living space. With built-in wardrobes, the master bedroom represents great use of space and the contemporary style bathroom features both a Jacuzzi and a shower.

Large French doors add a touch of luxury to the room and open up to reveal their own private roof terrace, which they’ve furnished with stylish wicker sofas. The two large Velux windows in their son’s bedroom welcome natural light into this space and the additional storage under the eaves serves as a discreet space for storing those seldom-used items, such as their Christmas decorations.

Happy he made the decision to convert his loft, Andre says:

“We’re really happy with the conversion, and the extra space has improved our lifestyle hugely. We no longer feel like we’re living in a starter home, we’ve finally secured our forever family home – without even hiring a removal van.”
